Lovage is the herb every kitchen garden should have and almost none do. A single plant grows to 2 metres tall and provides enough intensely celery-flavoured leaves to season soups, stocks, and salads all season. Young stems can be candied like angelica. The seeds are used as a spice.

Completely perennial and fully hardy in Ireland. Dies back in winter, returns strongly each spring. The tall yellow flower umbels in summer are valuable for hoverflies and parasitic wasps — biological pest control for your garden.
