The best thing you can do for your lawn is stop feeding it and start growing clover instead. This mix of micro-clover, white clover, and red clover overseeds directly into existing grass, creating a dense, green carpet that fixes its own nitrogen from the air.
Clover lawns stay green in drought when grass goes brown. They need no fertiliser — ever. They feed bees from May to October. And they outcompete most lawn weeds once established.
This is an overseeding mix — sow directly into your existing lawn. Mow short, scarify vigorously with a rake to expose soil, broadcast the seed, then roll or walk over it. Keep mowing at 5–8cm height through the first season.
Each clover plant fixes 20–30g of nitrogen per year through its root nodules — enough to feed the surrounding grass without any synthetic input. It's how lawns worked before the fertiliser industry told us otherwise.

Mow your existing lawn as short as possible. Scarify vigorously with a spring-tine rake to expose bare soil. Broadcast seed evenly — no sand mixing needed. Roll or walk over to press seed into soil. Keep mowing at 5–8cm through the first season. Best results from spring sowing (March–May). Do not apply herbicide or fertiliser.
